Bar and Bat Mitzvah Preparation Schedule

Need to practice your prayers and blessings? Click here and listen as Rabbi Weiner reads and chants them aloud to you.

9 Months Prior to Ceremony
Attend a four session B’nai Mitzvah course. This is a mandatory component of the B’nai Mitzvah experience. You will receive a folder containing orientation materials, your Torah portion, a copy of the service and copies of the candle lighting and Torah blessings. Within this folder, you will also find the booklet entitled “A Spiritual Journey,” an article entitled “Putting God on the Guest List,” a Mazon envelope and a Timeline. The B’nai Mitzvah Pledge must be signed and returned to Rabbi Weiner before lessons begin.

6 Months Prior to Ceremony
You will meet with Rabbi Weiner to choose your section of the Torah portion. Please contact Cathleen Kallmeyer (206.315.7394) to begin scheduling your appointments. You will begin with Rabbi Cook, Rabbi Septimus or one of our tutors and will schedule meetings approximately once a week. You are expected to study ½ to one hour per evening as needed.

STUDY NOTE: It helps to create a suitable study environment in a quiet area with a CD/tape player, adequate light, and a comfortable desk and chair.

3 ½ Months Prior to the Ceremony
The weekly tutoring sessions will continue through the study of the Haftarah.

6 Weeks Prior to Ceremony
You will meet twice with Rabbi Weiner. During the first meeting, Rabbi Weiner will gauge progress, discuss the meaning of the Torah and Haftarah portions, and outline the drasha. Between meeting you will write a draft of your drasha, which you will work on with Rabbi Weiner during the second meeting.

2 Weeks Prior to Ceremony
You will attend the first of your rehearsals on the Bimah.

The Week Of the Ceremony
The entire family will attend the second rehearsal. At this rehearsal, the family will practice the choreography of the ceremony. This rehearsal will be followed by a walk with a rabbi. The rabbi will also check for the final Na’aseh V’nishma completion.

Later in the week you will have your third (final) rehearsal.

Please contact Cathleen at 206.315.7394 for appointments with Rabbi Weiner.

Please contact Emily at 206.315.7422 for appointments with Rabbi Cook or Rabbi Septimus.
