Everyday I Face the Book
Rosh HaShana 2009
Intro (Texting and talking to “self”)
- “Sorry…update Facebook status…service going well, feeling good, BTW, about to start sermon…see ya.”
- False start, then, “Not sure how they’re reacting to my intro, think they’re not sure what the heck I’m doing…LOL…D…”
- Another false start, then…“Sense they want me to get going with this, should probably begin, thinking about RH lunch, hope folks show up for tashlich, update you right after sermon, before shofar service, bye…D”
This little vignette is a parody and a bit exaggerated, but not by much. What began as a trendy way for young people to talk, bond and share has morphed under adult interest and passion into a monster of self-regard and self-obsession. Click here to read the full Sermon.
L’dor Vador: A Perception
Kol Nidre 2009
We all have these family stories. They’re so universal that they’ve become jokes. But within these tales is great wisdom, perspective and inspiration. You know them well: “When I was your age, I walked 5 miles in the snow to get to school, and on the way home I walked it again…backwards…with no shoes…carrying your uncle…and I never complained.” Click here to read the full Sermon.

We Got to Get Ourselves Back to the Garden
Well, I came upon a child of God He was walking along the road And I asked him, “Tell me, where are you going?” This he told me… I was born about sixteen months after the big party on Max Yasgur’s farm, and so I missed out on the three days of peace, love, and music that was the Woodstock Festival. That’s all right though, because Joni Mitchell, whose composition was adapted into the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song that is now inextricably linked to that event, also missed the concert. Change We Can Believe In, Belief We Can Change In
I never have much cared for Miley Cyrus or bought into the whole Hannah Montana phenomenon. I hope that’s not a terribly shocking confession. I don’t think I’m exactly part of her target demographic, nor are my children old enough to have become infatuated with her. And fortunately for me, by the time Gabe and Orli do reach teeny-bopper age, a new “pop tart” likely will have arisen to challenge Ms. Cyrus’ current influence over the teen market. The Good Christian
Herman Goldfein was what one would call a “pillar of the community.” He had worked his way from a minor retailer to become the proprietor of the largest independent men’s clothing store in town. He was active in his synagogue, having served both as president of the brotherhood and of the congregation as a whole. He contributed generously to Jewish and secular causes, and was a member of the chamber of commerce and the local Masonic lodge. He was well-liked and well-respected by everyone who knew him. Thus it was not surprising that when he passed away, most of the community came out to pay their respects and to eulogize him. Click here to read the full Sermon.

“Let Us Pray”
Good evening/morning and good Yontov. Please turn to your neighbor and join hands as we pray: God - We, congregants and guests of Temple De Hirsch Sinai, pray that the Jewish calendar year, 5770, be a year when we turn despair into hope, tears into laughter, anger into happiness, grudges into reconciliation, hate into love, and war into peace.
