Parasha Ekev
"Because I said so!" may be a classic rebuttal from a parent to a child when a household rule is challenged, but most parents soon come to see that such an argument is ineffective.  Youngsters want a rational answer to their query of "Why should I?" and not a vague parental fiat.

This is true for most of us.  In our efforts to understand how the world works and to figure out the social norms expected by the culture in which we live, we generally want to have some comprehension of the why, as well... Click here to read more. arrow

This week's Portion:
Ekev: Deuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25
Haftarah: Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3

Next week's Portion:
Re'eh: Deuteronomy 11:26 - 16:17
Haftarah: Isaiah 54:11 - 55:5

Do a Mitzvah!

A young family of 4 is heading to Seattle for a stem cell transplant.  They need a fully furnished two bedroom (or larger) house or apartment to rent on a month-to-month basis starting in late August/early September, for 4-6 months. The place needs to be very clean and within a few miles of University Washington Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. They would like to be close to a park or playground and have access to internet and laundry facilities. The family is also looking for a babysitter to help care for their daughters (ages 4 and 1) during the month of September and possibly longer. They'd like someone who is trustworthy, responsible, warm and loving who can take the girls to parks, the library and other child-friendly places. They will probably need childcare for 4-6 hours/day, a few days/week, but a flexible schedule would be ideal.

If you are able to assist with either the housing or the childcare, please contact Gayle Carrol at gayle.carrol@comcast.net

Tashlich is a powerful Jewish ritual where we “cast off” the things we need to leave behind into a body of water. For those of us who have experienced intimate partner abuse, the new year’s theme of atoning for our missteps can raise complex questions. Click here for more information.arrow
