A Taste of Torah
Naso'
Numbers 4:21 - 7:89
Finding Balance
In this week's portion, Naso, we encounter the most famous 3 verses in Judaism, and perhaps Western religion: the 3 fold priestly benediction. Aaron the High Priest is mandated to offer the blessing as an agent of God to the people. The words are as familiar as they are powerful:
May Adonai bless you and keep you.
May Adonai's face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
May Adonai's face lift toward you and give you peace.
Though seemingly repetitive, the rabbis never passed up an interpretive opportunity to find meaning in redundancy. The modern interpreter, Nechama Leibowitz, sums up tradition's understanding that the first prayer is for material well being, the second for spiritual, and the third for both. In addition to this model for striking a balance of priorities between the material and the spiritual, the blessing encompasses the balance between God as the source of blessing and humanity as integral partners who realize this gift in the world. Few lines of ancient wisdom say so much in so few words.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Weiner

We didn't have any Ask the Rabbi Questions this week so enjoy an article from Rabbi Weiner's Blog, www.goodgodforus.com
The name “Spock” indelibly impacted the culture of the 1960s through a popular commitment to an age-old ideal: balance. The “Benjamin” variant of Spock, the granddaddy of all chutzpah-driven child development gurus, counseled harried parents to strive for a healthy pairing of discipline and nurture. The “Mr.” version (no first name for Vulcans, but the niceties of conventional address?) constantly struggled for a few years in the mid-60s to battle his half-bred imprints pitting Vulcan rationalism against human emotion. Amidst a rich and radical stew of anti-Vietnam and pro-Civil Rights moralizing that was the most common fare of the show, Spock’s more existential quandary resonated well beyond the expiration date of Star Trek’s other social crusades.
Which is why, despite the passing of 40 years and countless television and cinematic sequels, Mr. Spock’s psychic struggle between chilly, alien reason and the volcanic effluence of terrestrial appetites emerges as a key theme in the continuing trek of the JJ Abrams era. But this struggle between elemental forces and the challenge to find equilibrium mark other, more consequential facets of “real” life. Click here to read more

John Muir School's Tools Project
WE NEED 202 MORE BACKBACKS FILLED TO REACH OUR GOAL! PLEASE HELP!
More than 60% of the children at John Muir Elementary qualify for free lunch; many more are from families with limited means. In friendship with the school, TDHS would like to provide John Muir's 320 students with the backpacks and school supplies they will need to begin the 2009-2010 school year. For about $40 each -- the cost of a backpack and a few core supplies -- the TDHS community can make a big difference for these students, most whose families have substantial economic challenges. The deadline is June 30. Please deliver packs and supplies to Temple offices. Thank you so much for being a part of this effort for the students of John Muir Elementary!
